Phoenix Artist Club
High drama is written into every smoke-stained corner of this characterful thespian’s boozer beneath the Phoenix Theatre, whether it’s in the form of pithy theatrical quotations scrawled on wooden beams, framed production posters from years gone by or the array of autographed headshots above the bar. Then there are the drinkers themselves, dotted around the mismatched tables armed with pints, annotated scripts and bottomless coffers of ambition. The drinks selection may be bog-standard, the range of bar snacks uninspired (although the ageing silver bowls into which staff pour packet peanuts are rather charming), but this is an unmissable place all the same. Be sure to get there before 8pm if you’re a non-member.
