Alma
Its marvellous green-tiled façade the first sight to greet travellers alighting at Wandsworth Town train station, the Alma is the ever busy hub of an otherwise sleepy high street. Run for years by Charles Gotto (as was the nearby Ship), it’s now under Young’s management – but retains its popularity. Local tradesmen, commuters postponing their return home, rugger fans and sweaty amateur sportsmen make up most of the clientele, but the well-designed interior (antique carved wood, mosaics, painted mirrors) has more than enough room for everyone. From the elegant central bar, attentive staff serve the usual suspects alongside Young’s ales and draught Peroni (£3.80 a pint!), while the cellar downstairs (peek in on the way to the toilets) shows that wine is taken seriously here. The swanky adjoining dining room serves epic portions of superior British grub (steak, ale and mushroom pie, sirloin steak with chips, poached lemon sole).
