Admiral Codrington
So neatly revamped it’s almost a bar – the stripped-back furniture, the dark browns and greens, the yin-and-yang fish logo – the Cod still behaves like a pub, and one with a good restaurant attached. Pints of Bombardier, Greene King IPA, Guinness and Heineken are dispensed from the island bar counter. The 30-strong wine list also serves diners, so those in the bar can order a decent tipple by the glass – an Avila pinot noir San Luis Obispo (£6.50/£26.50) for example, or a Chablis Domaine du Colombier (£7/£28). Pub food is of the superior traditional variety: pints of prawns, own-made cumberland sausage rolls and so on. An enclosed courtyard allows for outdoor drinking in warmer weather.
