5th View
Bookshops ain’t what they used to be. These days you’ll find not only author signings and talks, but jazz sessions, quizzes, wine-tasting evenings, singles events… and in the case of Waterstone’s in Piccadilly, a damn fine cocktail bar perched on the fifth floor. We were impressed by a jazzy kir royale, served with a cube of berry jelly and little spoons to scoop up the cassis foam on top; the Bloody Mary, meanwhile, was as spicy as a Jackie Collins novel. Tarts with toppings like crab, chilli and lime were served to the peckish. The view is worth a mention too – though not as glamorous as, say, Vertigo 42, you do get a fine skyline vista that takes in Big Ben.
