Albannach
3 courses & a glass of Devaux Champagne: £18
Offer valid until Jun 8
If you thought it was just wine buffs who got to rattle on about the underlying hints of teak in their tipple, think again: the menu at this upmarket Scottish bar and restaurant is a slim bible of regional whiskies, each one glowingly described in terms of composite flavours (seaweed, TCP, chocolate-coated cherries). There are also plenty of whisky-based cocktails: the 1984 is made from a single malt hailing from the island where Orwell spent his last days. But there’s less to lure non-whisky lovers: the ground-floor bar is overly bright and aesthetically uninspiring. In avoiding Scottish tokenism (cultural nods are roughly limited to kilted staff, antler-based light fixtures and tasteful black and white Highland prints), the place is strangely bereft of real character. Proof that prime real estate and a novel idea does not a destination make.
