St Paul's Tavern
This Greene King boozer – bearing the company’s pub sign dated 1799 and boasting a brewing pedigree back to 1750 – is now dwarfed by a huge building site set up for office development in 2008. Nevertheless, a timeless boozer atmosphere reigns within the four-spaced, low-ceilinged cabin of a pub. House ales Morland Old Speckled Hen and Original and Greene King IPA are served over the cramped bar counter. Wines, cheap by the glass (none over £3.50), lend a fine lunchtime accompaniment to the house deli selections of warm camembert, grilled chicken breast and Wiltshire ham. More serious buffs can opt for a Chablis (£17.45) or Ropiteau Frères Fleurie (£17.95), the hungry a steak and ale pie or sausages and mash.
