Positively 4th Street
Although it’s not known exactly which 4th Street Dylan was referring to in the song that lends its name to this bar, we can be pretty confident it’s nowhere in the vicinity of the 1960s town-planning hell that is the Hampstead Road. Thankfully, this dark little bar is pure escapism. The decorative theme is somewhere between New York mob speakeasy and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Booze, the food hails from Japan, and the cocktails (£5.95 for a Singapore Sling) and hypnotic ceiling fans (they paddle rather than spin) put one in mind of Raffles – albeit a budget version you can reach on the N29 bus. What’s more, the barman was very gracious when we sent chilli sauce flying the length of the bar.
