King’s Head
The only thing letting down this excellent backstreet local are the cutesy signs written in wobbly lower-case handwriting, telling you that the roasts are ‘as good as mum’s’, and recommending ‘rosey rosés’ as ‘our favourite wine’. If you’re serving up excellent food and booze for adult human beings, why the kindergarten-speak? This gripe aside, there’s a nicely varied selection of lagers (Amstel, Star, Paulaner, Früli); lip-smacking Fuller’s ales with Timothy Taylor Landlord as back-up; and reliable bar food, ranging from wasabi snacks to top-notch sausages and mash (although it’s not always quick to arrive). The surroundings are restful and welcoming, with comfortable sofas, framed daubings on the walls, and wooden tables and chairs that are not only higgledy but decidedly piggledy too. Top-rate.
