deVigne
Don’t be put off by the 101 Dalmationspun in the name: deVigne is a classy dame. Everything inside is designer, from the kitsch 1960s chandeliers and neon candelabras etched in glass to the DayGlo Regency trim – collected together by Wallpaper* darling Stephen Ryan. Sure, it’s over the top and pricey, but this is what designer hotel bars should feel like. There are no taps here – everything fizzy comes in bottles – but the wine, champagne and cocktail lists are exemplary and the spirits lining the mirrored shelves behind the bar are impressively varied. Take the whiskies – a broad sweep of prestige Scots brands, plus exotics like Japanese Suntory. It’s often quiet, but bar staff know their drinks, and the slick decor provides a welcome break from gastropub sofaland.
