London's best review, food and drink news
Playing on its theatrical links (the comedy venue is upstairs), the Hen & Chickens makes an effort to create a lively setting: stage spotlights and disco balls fixed to the ceiling, pendulous fairy lights lining the back of the blackboard-style bar, and music blaring out from the jukebox. The pub is filled with sociable groups of twenty- to thirtysomething student types (and the odd ageing barfly), many of whom are here for pre-production food and drink. There's a wide range of decent enough beverages, and fun extras like posh squash (£1). Food is cheap and cheerful: quesadillas (£3.95), panini (£4.25), chicken wings (£3.90) and a range of puds (£3.50).
