St Stephen's Tavern
Most brewery bosses would give their drinking arm for a venue such as this one, diagonally opposite Big Ben. Somehow it seems apt that it should be traditional old Hall & Woodhouse running such a time-honoured establishment, and a thoroughly good job they’ve done of it too. The decor of this restored gem is all carved wood and etched glass, with towering displays of fresh flowers reaching up to the high, high ceilings. Three bar areas – two at street level overlooked by a mezzanine – are served by the same, well-staffed counter, where pints of Tangle Foot, Sussex and Badger and authentic Munich lager HB are dispensed. Tea and muffins (£4.25) and English breakfasts (£6.25) keep with the general air of decorum.
