Prince Bonaparte
A large, open-plan Victorian pub-gone-gastro, site for Johnny Vaughan’s Strongbow ads, the Bonaparte has a high reputation for its food and variety of drinks. Draught London Pride, Schneider Weiss, Budvar and Hoegaarden are complemented by an eclectic, 37-strong wine list, including a rich Vidal pinot noir from New Zealand and a dry and refreshing Don Pabiot Pouilly-Fumé (both £19). An already healthy crowd expands on Thursday, when the resident female DJ spins an ’80s mix, and at weekends, when the loud interaction and background sounds render conversation impossible. On a quiet lunchtime, though, you can recline in a leather armchair by an open fire and browse the paintings in the gallery before taking your place in the dining area for a slap-up meal.
