Opinion among regulars was divided when this large Sam Smith's pub in the heart of Portobello underwent a complete refurbishment around three years ago. Ironically, the owners have returned the bar to its original Victorian design. The main room is split into a maze of interconnected snugs with low, gated doorways that require most adults to bend double. It's certainly different - something akin to a gentlemen's club for elves. But if that's all a bit too much, there's a large backroom with sofas, banquettes and two open fireplaces. We were sad to see the old conservatory go, but its demise means the attractive beer garden is now even larger. The Lonsdale's far cheaper than other pubs in the vicinity and feels like a proper neighbourhood boozer once the Saturday tourists have gone. All this and beautifully maintained loos too.
