Salisbury
Pubs don’t get more palatial than the Salisbury, nor more Victorian. The place was transformed by its namesake leaseholder and turn-of-the-century prime minister, who had an interior created of beautifully carved mahogany, etched glass and art nouveau lamps. The current management treats this legacy with respect, offering the theatre and tourist crowd a superb range of ales, a choice of 20 superior pub meals, well-priced wines and, as it boasts, no TV sports. St Austell Tribute, John Holt, Young’s, Bombardier and Hook Norton Old Hooky stand out among the beers. Lager drinkers are offered Peetermans Artois, Leffe and Budvar, with the American version by the bottle. Most wines come by the glass and bottle, including a Chablis Ropiteau (£3.85/£5.30/£14.90).
