Alexandra
This is a spacious, popular pub, conveniently near to Wimbledon station – but an effort to make the Alexandra all things to all men has given it something of a split personality. Personality number one is the traditional boozer, with warm dark wood, tucked-away snugs, good cask ales (Young’s, Bombardier) and a huge TV screen. The clientele ranges from middle-aged regulars to gothy teenagers taking their first tentative steps into the dusky world of alcohol. Round the side of the smaller bar is a door, leading through to personality number two: Smart Alex – a wine bar with a separate dining area that tries a little too hard to be classy, with customers doing the same (there’s a tranquil roof garden though). The Alexandra is a decent pub with gallons of potential, but it would help if someone managed to unify the slightly odd dichotomy.
