The cabin-like Newman Arms has had the decorators in, but is still in touch with its history. A poster for the Italian version of Michael Powell's Peeping Tom, filmed right here in 1960, faces a black and white portrait of former regular George Orwell above the bar. Upon the bar are taps of London Pride, Adnams and Guinness (when will they get a decent lager?), but here beer is only half the story. Pies are the staple, best enjoyed in the Famous Pie Room upstairs (you may have to book); numerous fillings include chicken and broccoli in leek and pepper sauce, lamb and rosemary, or beef and Guinness, all at £8.95.
