Tenth Bar
Press ‘X’ in the lift of the Royal Garden Hotel and you are whisked to the same magnificent panoramic view of London that the hotel’s guests pay top dollar for. Find a low, brown leather armchair in the unfussy bar area adjoining the larger restaurant. You are soon brought a bowl of spicy nuts while you peruse a drinks menu that includes three dozen cocktails (£8.50-£9.75), 15 champagnes and a host of vintage malts. As a holding bar, the Tenth is big on aperitifs, with apple, lychee or melon martinis mixed with Zubrówka, Stolichnaya or Absolut. A quality Chablis (Domaine de l’Egalité, Jean Durop, £9) stands out of the eight wines available by the glass; Newcastle Brown gives comedy value to the choice of four bottled beers.
