Alma
The Alma was refurbed and relaunched by Caroline Hamlin and Kirsty Valentine two years ago, at which point ‘the dartboard was swapped for a blackboard menu’. One thing the new owners didn’t change, thankfully, was the vast bay windows that dominate the front of the bar, looking out onto Newington Green. On a sunny afternoon the result is arresting: light pours through like a hazy, golden big-budget beer commercial. The pub, then, is best suited to lazy afternoons spent flicking through the broadsheets or discussing the cricket. Courage and Director’s are on draught, while the kitchen churns out the likes of roast pork belly with apple risotto (£11). This can be washed down with one of ten wines of each colour, half of which are available by the glass.
