Museum Tavern
A rare example of a pub as popular with locals as tourists, rejoicing in both a noble history (the current, splendid interior dates to a mid 19th-century refurb) and an ideal location (opposite the front gates of the British Museum). Ignore the logoed T-shirts for the six real ales (Greene King IPA, Pride, Theakston’s Old Peculier, Timothy Taylor Landlord and guests Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted and, disappointingly, Bombardier) that decorate an expansive bar backed by mirrors advertising liquor manufacturers. Wines run to half a dozen of each by glass and bottle (reasonably priced at around a tenner), plus a couple of champagnes and rosés, and food is pub staples prodded a little upmarket. A row of flimsy tables cling to the pavement along Museum Street.
