White Swan
Straying from the City into Jack the Ripper territory – note the newspaper evidence in a pub otherwise mercifully free of tat – you find this cosy outpost of the Shepherd Neame stable. They even serve pots of tea. Regulars, who compose the bulk of the clientele, come here for a pint or two of Master Brew, Spitfire and Porter, or draught Asahi, Holsten and Oranjeboom. Wines include a Domaine de la Bouronière Fleurie (£18) and a Château Terre Rouge Medoc (£17.50); the handful available by the glass are chalked up behind the bar. In keeping with the understated surroundings, a simple selection of eats centres on ciabatta sandwiches and the like; a daily menu offers more filling grub.
