Vertigo 42
And you thought the view from Gary Rhodes’s restaurant – 18 storeys down – was impressive. Situated on the 42nd floor of the tallest edifice in the City, Vertigo 42 enjoys a truly stunning London panorama. The suits, romantics and view-tourists who come here all react in much the same way – ‘Blimey’ (or something ruder). Visitors have to earn their vista: the check-in process, including X-ray machines and guest passes, is reminiscent of arrival at an airport. Thankfully, the bar itself no longer looks like the corresponding departure lounge – a thoughtful revamp means a new darker colour scheme to complement the floor-to-ceiling windows and the city-spread beyond. Champers is surely the only appropriate order; bottles start at £44 for Champagne de Castellane and rise to mighty heights of their own. Otherwise, there are cocktails (the likes of a kir royale or bellini, £11.50) and pricey bar snacks. With a bowl of olives at £3.95, this view don’t come cheap – but it’s a genuine London must-do.
