Hole in the Wall
This landmark seems to have been offering ‘one for the rail’ since the age of steam. Tucked beneath a railway arch opposite the main entrance to Waterloo station, it’s a place designed to concentrate the minds of its clientele – geezers in trainers alongside suits with cigars – on their beer. There isn’t even a window in the main bar to distract from the arched ceiling of exposed brickwork, faded yellow walls and old pub mirrors. You can trade space for light by squeezing into the miniature front bar, where a window looks out on to a little lane and the mood is slightly less blokey. An excellent and well-kept ale selection offers old troupers such as Greene King IPA, Adnams Broadside and Bombardier as well as various guest beers. Leffe, Staropramen and Paulaner add a nod to the continent. One of the few places left with a pinball machine too.
