Big windows at the front catch the light beautifully, creating a pleasant feel even when Junction Road is at its greyest. St John's has long been a star in the gastropub firmament, with an adventurous modern menu that's mainly served in a grand hall of a dining room at the back, lined with eclectic art. There's relatively less space for drinkers, especially at weekends when dining tables take over more of the bar; but it's still a welcoming spot that encourages conversation. The wine list is superior, with well-chosen French, Italian and Spanish labels; beers on tap include Leffe, Hoegaarden, Timothy Taylor and Black Sheep.
