Torriano
Although the cream-and-grey-painted exterior looks very smart indeed, the Torriano’s stripped-down, diminutive interior is slightly tatty round the edges – and all the better for it, we say. On cold nights an open fire crackles by the bar, while candles and a string of fairy lights twinkle in the dim back area. Food options are simple but sustaining, with toasted sandwiches and barbecues in the sunken garden on summer weekends. The Croatian landlord keeps a fine line-up of beers and real ales, including Hoegaarden, Pedigree, Guinness and London Pride, and a good choice of wines are chalked up on the blackboard. The music’s a winner too, with tracks from the Byrds and Spencer Davies Group providing a suitably laidback soundtrack to our last midweek visit.
