Luring trendy kids in skinny jeans and black eyeliner, the George & Dragon is scruffy but stylish. It's a cosy space with crimson walls and a womb-like interior enlivened by kitsch touches: twinkly lights (it always looks like Christmas here) and knick-knacks galore (pink flamingos, a rhinestone-studded cowboy hat, a stuffed weasel). A cardboard cut-out of Kim Wilde surveys a knowing, mostly gay crowd who plant tongues firmly in cheek as they dance to cheesy pop (Kylie and Girls Aloud), vintage gems (Kate Bush, Pulp) and forgotten oddities (Culture Club's 'The Medal Song'). Most punters drink pints from plastic cups (San Miguel, Blanc, Kronenbourg and Foster's). Arrive early at weekends if you want to snag a table, otherwise it's standing room only.

Whats not to love? This is the closest you will ever get to a party in a public house. Friendly (though watch out for scuzzy bag snatchers), fun and extrovert, this place will lift anyone and banish the blues in a disco (mostly 70's and 80's) haze. Brilliant.
