Whistle & Flute
It can be tough to find anywhere on Putney High Street that’s worth drinking in. But this place, converted from a branch of NatWest, has more to offer than you might expect. For starters, it’s one of the few pubs in this part of town that isn’t tied to Young’s, so take the opportunity to down a pint of Fuller’s ESB or London Pride, and if you peer over the bar there are bottles of Cruzcampo where you’d normally find a stash of alcopops. If you’re lucky enough to grab the sofa at the back, you’ll also see a large collection of ketchup bottles, which give an idea of the unpretentious grub on offer (steak and ale pie, goat’s cheese omelette, burgers, sandwiches and the like). The Whistle & Flute’s location doesn’t help it to draw in discerning drinkers, but it’s certainly worth a visit if you happen to be passing through.
