Red Lion
Named in the early 1600s after King James I and given an ornate makeover by the Victorians, the Red Lion is a timeless English pub with classic dark wood decor. Two narrow bar areas are straddled by a beautifully carved, etched-glass island bar dispensing pints of Marston’s, Bombardier, Timothy Taylor Landlord, London Pride and Amstel, as well as glasses of Laroche Chablis (£4.85/ £16.95) and Marktree merlot (£4.20/£14.95). The nine wines and food – pies, sturdy sandwiches, jacket potatoes – are generic to the Red Lion’s status as a Nicholson’s pub. Packed at lunch, the Red Lion offers the perfect mid-afternoon excuse not to go back to the office. Map p273 J7.
