One-Eight-One
You might not immediately seek out a place on the A4 to kick off your evening and, indeed, the staff of the Rockwell Hotel seemed almost surprised when we asked if we could have a drink in their bar. It’s a pristinely decorated little area, divided from the acclaimed restaurant by a small partition. But you don’t pay over the odds for the swank; the wines are actually below average pub prices and the well-presented six-quid cocktails come with hefty bowls of high-calibre nuts. The clientele on our visit consisted of a middle-aged couple loudly discussing the ingredients for fish pie over a soundtrack of soporific incidental music – but get a few of your mates in and you could transform the ambience pretty quickly.
