Duke's Head
This cavernous place on the banks of the Thames supposedly offers ‘views of the river’, but the vistas are only visible to diners, and are slightly compromised by drinkers spilling out of the pub with pints in hand and stumbling up and down the riverbank. Young’s have once again made something of an attempt to tart the pub up for the middle classes, with menus in little folders, hilarious beer tasting notes and wines categorised in terms of their, er, laid-back-ness. No one can deny the handsome character of the place, with its original Victorian features and gorgeously ornate glass screens, and it’s always busy – but despite the ever-reliable Young’s ales and eclectic wine list, it feels a bit like an upmarket Harvester.
