Champion
A standard corner pub exterior does little to prepare you for the decorative Victorian opulence within. Sporting greats of the era are depicted window-frame by window-frame in glorious stained glass. Cricket’s WG Grace, golf’s Young Tom Morris and Channel swimmer Captain Matthew Webb look over a church-like interior of dark wood and frosted glass. Plump leather banquettes and curved alcoves allow a generational mix of customers to relax over standard Samuel Smith brews and a menu of wild boar sausages, liver and bacon, and jacket potatoes. It’s a place for easy chatter around the island bar, a round of darts, a post-work pint or nonchalant pre-match analysis. You might find it in any Yorkshire market town. Here in West One, it’s unique.
