A two-room, high-ceilinged wood-panelled bar and adjoining restaurant, this is the public face of the Great Eastern Hotel beside Liverpool Street station. The cross of the saint in question features gratuitously: on the pub sign, the matchboxes, the staff uniforms (poor Antipodeans!), the ashtrays. But what’s draught Beck’s doing between the proud pumps of London Pride and Bombardier? A predictable selection of wines accompany meals – upscale dishes brought out on sturdy white plates, tucked into by smartly dressed members of middle management, making a good fist of being uncomfortably balanced on high stools and tables. A surprisingly upbeat soundtrack plays throughout, guitar-driven rock bouncing off the gilt-framed faux historic prints and Bishopsgate 1620 signs.
