Abingdon
Proof that you can run an attractive, upscale bar and restaurant in an attractive, upscale part of town – and not charge the earth. An expansive couch accommodates lovers or gossiping girlfriends, while checkerboard-motifed tables suit clusters of grown-ups and nuclear families. The 60-strong wine list is exemplary. Starting with a Sicilian Borgo Selene Bianco and 2004 Pic St-Pierre Val de Montferrand, both at £11.95 (£3.95 for a glass), it runs to a Finca Antigua tempranillo from La Mancha and a Sangoma chenin blanc, topping off at a 2003 C Perchaud Chablis and a 2002 St-Emilion Château Haut Gros Caillou, both £38. A dozen are available by the glass, six by the half-bottle. The cocktail choice (£6.50-£7) is fairly standard, but ingredients are decent: the martinis, for example, are made with Absolut or Tanqueray. If you’re feeling peckish, the restaurant serves Modern European food (chilli and coconut red snapper, roast rump of lamb with blue cheese sweet potato mash), at around £15 a main.
