North Nineteen
A mere empty Special Brew can's throw from the Holloway Road is this spruced-up boozer that's all pine, adventurous colour clashes and swirly flock wallpaper. A tad 'Changing Rooms' but the service is immaculate.
On the pumps are St Austell Tribute from Cornwall and, should you prefer your beer made with bottom-fermenting yeast, Budweiser Budvar, imported from the Czech Republic. The food is quintessentially English: freshly prepared pub grub carried off with a modern twist. Tuesday hosts an open mic night, and there are monthly wine-tastings, lots of board games and more televised sports than you could shake a remote control at.
On our visit bar talk centred on the forthcoming beer festival from April 10-13, and which beers will get the regulars' votes (see website for details).
