Bars & Pubs

  • Scala

  • This dual-purpose establishment manages to tick the right music boxes as a club and as a live venue, and the variety of nights and gigs means it's bound to appeal to everyone at some point. The layout and design are good, with a balcony and mezzanine-type levels providing great views of the stage and plenty of stairs to get lost in. Nights range from hedonistic dance like Smartie Partie and Kinky Malinki to salsa on a grand scale - this is where the Latin Collective throw their all-nighters.

The club night I attended was alright in itself (music, prices etc) however - and surprisingly - I was cold all night! Having queued in the bitter cold for half an hour, and having queued to deposit my jacket, alas I realised that the inside of Scala was cold too - even in the main room there seemed to be a misterious chill. The smoking area was quite pathetic for a venue of that size: Middle of winter, 3 am, outdoor and - you guessed it - no heaters! Sort it out Scala!
