As you'd expect of the main bar at London's most talked-about new hotel, Brumus is a handsome chap. More surprising, it isn't a bit snobbish - in fact, on a Saturday night, at least half the attendees were decidedly unhip, somewhat elderly post-theatre types. The wallpaper and ceiling bear vaguely geomantic motifs on a mollifying maroon backing, matched by upholstered bar stools and comfy mini furniture (think low easy chair rather than sloppy couch), fully accessorised by a horse made of cogs and delicious standing tea-light chandeliers. The pricey cocktails are imaginative, if a little too solicitous; we expected more bite from an intriguing Blazing Apple martini (feijoa and red chilli, feijoa vodka, Apple Sourz, lychee juice). There are good wines and, although not explicitly mentioned on the list, bottled beers like Peroni.
