The Ritz's landmark bar was refurbished a few years ago, apparently tarted up to something like its 1920s glory. We've not seen photographs of how it looked in its heyday, but we can say with some certainty that it probably looked a lot more tasteful in black and white. The ostentatiousness is astonishing, with the handsome curved art deco furniture totally overshadowed by the garish accents and the hideous leopard-print chairs. The drinks are suitably expensive and the atmosphere suitably prickly (jackets and ties, gents). Everyone likes a bit of needless luxury from time to time, but there are more appealing and places than this in which to find it.
