So steeped in its own legend that it has the word 'Norman's' above its own pub sign, the Coach is nonetheless moving away from the era of the famously rude landlord Norman Balon and the associated cast of louche, literary regulars. These days, breakfasts, Beck's Vier, Wi-Fi access, Illy coffee and an upstairs dining room are main features. Still, landlord Alistair Choat also knows the value of nostalgia, so Peter O'Toole and Jeffrey Bernard appear on the walls in mounted handbill and caricature form, and the Beatles-era Double Diamond, Ind Coope and Skol Lager signs still glow in lollipop colours from the back bar.

The Coach and Horses is most famous for being the favourite pub of columnist Jeffrey Barnard who was immortalised in the play Jeffrey Barnard is Unwell, and the pub has been a haunt of various other Soho personalities.
The ex-landlord Norman Balon was also known as London’s Grumpiest Landlord, so people would come from miles away just to experience his grumpiness.
If you can get a table on a weekday afternoon and let the afternoon slide away in a haze of ale and toasted sandwiches, theres are no better places to watch London stroll by.
On a sidenote, the Coach and Horses has a great upstairs function room that is perfect for gatherings of 30-40 people and lots of places to go for a fag if you are a smoker. It's serving ‘proper food’ (i.e. not just toasted sandwiches) which can also be rented out. It’s a cool little spot.
With ales on tap downstairs and very friendly staff. I can see myself becoming a regular!
