This cosy, century-old Nicholson's corner pub has changed little since Orwell hung out here in the 1940s. Today's regulars take their tipples seriously; there are even ale tasting sessions on Monday evenings. Quality Timothy Taylor Landlord, Black Sheep and Bombardier ales aside, there are 'finest British sausages' from John Pettit, butcher to Harrods and Fortnum & Mason, as well as an array of hearty mains. Head upstairs for table service in the comfort of the George Orwell Bar & Dining Room (he once hired it to celebrate the success of one of his books).
