London's best review, food and drink news
Kitsch, louche and very late-night, the Phoenix attracts a regular crowd of debauched luvvies and miscreants to its basement den. Decked out in framed handbills, publicity shots and gaudy art, the bar offers a decent range of draught lagers (Red Stripe, Kirin, Budvar), plus Bombardier and Bellevue Kriek, to all comers during the day and to members after 8pm (non-members can stay after 8pm but must arrive before). As well as a dozen wines (Crystal Brook chardonnay or shiraz, £4.20/£14.95), the Phoenix offers platters (Greek or Asian, £5.95), combos (Tex-Mex for two, £10.95) and ten mains (sirloin steak, £9.95). Most, though, are here for the post-midnight banter in a reliably upbeat and lively space.
