'A Great British Tradition' runs the wording around this 600-year-old pub between the Cenotaph and Big Ben. And with Spitfire, Courage Directors, Fuller's London Pride, Theakston Old Peculiar, Old Speckled Hen, Black Sheep bitter and John Smith's poured in wood-panelled surroundings, while sideburned politicians from Gladstone's day look down, who could gainsay such a statement? Continental Zywiec, Budvar and Peroni hide among the bottles in the fridge, as do a few New World wines (Cape Province chenin blanc, £3.25/£12.35) - although they accompany the distinctly British fish and chips (£7.99) and steaks (£7.25) served in the restaurant upstairs.

i worked at the red lion back in the eighties for about 6 years.i worked mainly in the cellar bar.i look back with a lot of happy memories.i used to place passport photos of all my regulars on the back of the bar,i still have these photos with me.it was one of the best jobs i have ever had.my boss ken booth became like a father to me,i know everyone loved and respected him.the regulars there all became my friends.i used to party with a lot of them and was often in trouble with ken,but he always forgave me.i live in australia now .if anyone can tell me what became of ken it would be much appreciated.
