Bars & Pubs

  • Crown & Greyhound

  • This Victorian behemoth was once two pubs - the Crown for the gentry, the Greyhound for the great unhosed - that have long since been united by a democratic unbricking. The cavernous interior comprises a central bar and three rooms with wooden benches overlooked by an ornately moulded ceiling, while the enormous two-tiered beer garden gets packed in summer. As the only pub in the village it's also a community centre of sorts; film screenings, wine and chess club meetings, and even weddings are hosted. The pub is planning a series of real ale festivals, while Young's Bitter, Harveys Sussex Best and London Pride are served up daily.

We had our staff Christmas 'do' there last night which was a mixture of those having a set meal and the majority having a buffet. The set meal was fine (8people) but the buffet for £210 was disgusting. 2 plates of potato salad, gem lettuce with onion, some sort of cream cheese deep fried croquettes, cold tomato pasta and chicken skewers. When we complained they said they would bring more food but not give is a refund. They then produced burger bns cut into 4 with a slice of turkey/beef in and 2 plates of potato wedges. All of this banquet could have been made for about £40. When we asked for desserts and coffee or a refund we were told categorically no by a very rude and aggressive manager. The rest of the staff were pleasant enough but he obviously realised that the service we had been given was appalliing. We have been using this pub for many years for meetings, conferences and staff 'do's' ...no more until it changes hands again which we all hope is sooon!!!
