A decorative discrepancy over dates - the façade says 1795, the glazed front-door windows insist on 1695 - can't hide the historic nature of this riverside hostelry. Ales are another attraction (St Austell Tribute, Abbot, Fuller's London Pride) as well as bloody great dinners such as ribeye steak (£12.95) with all the trimmings. There are fine whiskies too - Dalwhinnie, Talisker and Lagavulin - somehow fitting with the ground floor's nautical decor. Upstairs is less claustrophobic, while the rows of seats outside overlooking the river come into their own in summer.
