A cavernous corner pub, built as a hotel in 1896, the Half Moon is the hostelry that most benefits from proximity to Brockwell Park. But, while it's easy to be put off by the crowds on the tarmac outside, there's always space inside, something that's easy to miss through elegant stained-glass windows offering 'Luncheon' and 'Billiards'. The back room has hosted bands since the late 1970s and - while its owners dine out on the fact the Police and U2 played here - these days the fare is an eccentric mix of pub rockers (Chicken Shack, Albert Lee) and avant-garde noiseniks (arts station Resonance FM hosts a night).

The best pizza in south London...even better than Franco Manca in Brixton. If you are feeling adventurous, try the steak or one of the mezze platters. The italian chefs know what they are doing and hopefully they are going to get the chance to fully expand the menu sometime soon. The most unexpected food from an old Victorian pub-the best kept food secret in Herne Hill that hopefully this review will put right.
