Elegant yet unpretentious, the Rye is still one of the most popular gastropubs round these parts. The well-executed English fare complements rather than overshadows the booze: there's an interesting and reasonably priced wine list (try Piemonte Cortese; £17.50/£4.70); some classic cocktails, such as strawberry daiquiri (£6), and changing ales (Wadworth 6X, Exmoor and Hound Dog), as well as Hoegaarden, Leffe and Staropramen on tap. There's a mellow vibe in the evenings, with lounge beats and candle-light, while the weekends draw families for the perennially popular Sunday lunch.
