The team behind Islington's Winchester bar brings its pub-cum-DJ lounge concept to Ealing in the shape of the Lodge Tavern. And the timber-clad walls, flock wallpaper, dark wood furniture and trophy antlers are exactly what the doctor ordered for W5's younger residents. Laid-back, unpretentious and quirky, with decent DJs at weekends and a large area for alfresco drinking, the Lodge has certainly made its mark. The bar staff know how to mix a decent cocktail, and alongside classic recipes there are seven house elixirs, including a refreshing Strazberi Sling (a Pimm's and vodka concoction). On tap are everyday beers like Kronenbourg, Guinness and Foster's - more effort has gone into selecting the short but diverse wine list.

The Lodge Tavern would be a great place to go in Ealing if the staff weren't so miserable. I've been there twice now, and it's very difficult to see a smile from anyone behind the bar. It seems like they all hate working there.
