Bars & Pubs

  • Ruby & Sequoia

  • Set back from the Portobello Road action, Ruby & Sequoia's slick black frontage and tinted windows scream style and inside the gorgeous gold-flocked wallpaper and olive leather booths don't disappoint. Cocktails are the main draw and well-mixed classics like cosmopolitans and caipirinhas (£7 each) hit the spot. Edgy art covers the walls but watching the boho babes and their beautiful boyfriends proved much more fun on our visit. Funky staff clad in black linen were sparky if a little clumsy - a third of one martini ended up on the table - and an extensive wine list plus 1664 Blanc and San Miguel on tap caters for those who prefer their refreshment neither shaken nor stirred.

I honestly cannot understand why this restaurant is not packed every night. I went in last week for a meal with my partner, the food, the service, the atmosphere, the decor; all was fantastic, I really cannot flaw the quality, the pace and the friendliness of this venue and yet we were sitting on one of the few tables being used. The only thing we discussed that did not feel right was the distance at which I was sitting from my partner; we felt like we were on different tables - but - was this due to the lack of other customers?! It didn't seem like a big enough issue to keep people away! Honestly - try it, it is a little too pricey to make it your regular eating spot but it definitely impressed us!

I often find the fun, quirky restaurants and bars that offer fashionable decor and an extensive cocktail menu suffer from poor service. Whether this is because there are too few staff to do all the jobs or the staff lack enthusiasm for their social roles, the experience for the customer is ruined. What I enjoyed so much about going to Ruby & Sequoia was how welcomed I was. The staff were friendly and happy to help whilst being efficient and having good knowledge of the menu and services. I believe the service is just as important as the menu and recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a fantastic meal and friendly faces.

I would definitely recommend anyone looking for a fantastic food and good cocktails to visit Ruby & Sequoia. I've only been a few times but never been disappointed. The food is really delicious and the staff are very friendly and professional - they have always been very efficient at taking care of us. You wouldn't expect there to be a club that is part of the same restaurant below but there it is which is also a great place to go, so it makes it an even better place to go with friends! It is not cheap but I would say it is good value for money as I have never complained.

We went to ruby and sequoia for a late brunch this weekend, having had a great time at portobello market. Well, brunch turned into early evening drinks, and then late evening drinks and dancing. Amazingly the place changed through the day, with the basement bar opening up into a fantastic club. Really superb way to waste saturday!
