Bars & Pubs

  • Annex 3

  • This is one of a trio of innovative enterprises run by Malaysian-born Hassan Abdullah, Frenchman Michel Lasserre and Swede Stefan Karison: the others, both in Shoreditch, are French restaurant Les Trois Garçons and bar Loungelover (see p189). All three share a swank-camp sensibility when it comes to design - so prepare to be dazzled by starburst chandeliers, foil, brocade and fairy lights on glass-topped tables. As original as the decor are the 20-odd cocktails defined as 'Old' and 'New Flames' (£8-£9), the former including a Loungelover of Annex 3 fig liqueur, sweet vanilla, lemon oil and prosecco, the latter a Wasabi Kiss of wasabi, basil, kiwi, Skyy vodka and Drambuie. Panch cocktails (£16) are the house speciality, modern takes on 17th-century recipes from Charles H Baker's Jigger, Beaker & Glass; try the East Meets West of fresh blueberries, saké, Whitley Neill gin, rose syrup, pressed apple and ginger ale. Wines, four each by the glass, run from a house Terra Ventoux (£4.50/£16) to vintages costing three figures; an early-evening prix fixe menu (two courses for £14.95, three for £19.95) is a snip considering the quality of the fare on offer. Booking a table is advisable most nights.

Unusual decor with very friendly staff who are very knowledgeable about the products. The drinks are outstanding are very well priced for the west end. The service so attentive that they are there when you need another drink rather than straining your neck looking for a server. The tapas menu is great and tasty. The casual eating style is really nice. The evening at Annex 3 was a success for all our friends and we will be back soon

Awful! Half hour for drinks, hour for starter, another hour for main (and only one dish to choose/'forced' to pick as 'ran out' of other dishes may I add) Decided it wasn't worth paying for the awful service and limited (aka.one dish) menu....so dined and dashed guys....sorry....but they truely deserved it. Annex 3, suck on it!!! p.s. may I state, I will always pay over the odds for quality service/food.....But Annex laaaaa, you failed to deliver. Lounge lover...the spotlights on you next week, prove yourself or you are getting B.U.M.P.E.D

    I went there 16/12/2008.
Service: 2/6. Poor, slow and inattentive service, took ages to get drinks, even though the place was hardly packed. Waiter never prompted for sides.
Food: 2/6. "Seared" Foie Gras was acceptable, if cool (was expecting warm), but steak was bland, poor cut (M&S regularly do better). Asked for Medium Rare and got Blue, so the chef needs to learn how to cook steak. Sides arrived very late, spinach was watery, potatoes acceptable. Lemon tart does not appear to have even been in the same room as a lemon and was greasy and bland. Wine list was good, however.
Atmosphere: 3/6. Funky interior with imaginative decor and flooring is let down by poor attention to detail, making some of the decor looking like a poor DIY job. Staff seem a little "precious" and need to remember that they are there to create an experience for their clientele, not for themselves. Clientele are cool and good natured.
Overall: 2/6. Could and should do better. This was my first "Tres Garcons" restaurant and I'm wondering what the fuss is all about. If this restaurant opened in upper east/west-side Manhattan (my benchmark for good cuisine) it would fold within a couple of months.
