Bars & Pubs

  • Grey Goose

  • Hand-pulled ales and gastropub classics

  • For years, the bar on this site made a living trading as the moderately funky, student-pleasing 100, until a makeover by the team behind Tooting's Smoke bar tried to capitalise on the nearby White House's menu of funky house and cocktails. Now, with the Grey Goose, everything's gone grown-up. The chef works hard to locally source a great menu of gastropub classics (massive pork chops with slices of black pudding and apple sauce), and there are hand-pulled ales and wheat beer. A pretty, heated outdoor deck space plus the elegant upstairs Blue Bar (available for private hire) complete the picture. A fireplace, sofas and brioche bread and butter pudding make it a difficult place to leave.

This place cannot decide if it is a late night music bar or a gastropub. we had an absolutely dreadful evening there last night. we went there with friends we hadn't seen for ages for food and a chat. the chat bit was deemed virtually impossible by the large, crackling speakers that blared out music literally at full blast directed into the dining area of the pub. I could barely hear the person next to me. we asked them to turn it down several times, but the apologetic (friendly) waitress explained that the owner was in with his mates playing all their favourite tunes - basically was having a house party at our expense. When the food finally turned up we all had headaches from shouting and we ate it fairly mechanically. It was unremarkable. If we hadn't been so eager to get out of there, I'd have stayed and refused to pay. It was a nightmare. Give it a wide berth.

We had Sunday lunch here and although we were warned that the food would not be on schedule - they had planned a BBQ but the so-called 'summer' had meant relocating all cooking activities to the kitchen - we couldn't have been happier. The manager was delightful, recommending (reasonably-priced!) wine, and whisking up an exciting vegetarian option for a member of our party who couldn't find anything they liked on the menu.
We all had the burgers (the roasts wouldn't have been ready until 2.30 and we were going to Loaded in the Park) and they were delicious - moist, succulent, perfectly cooked (rare) beef. Chips were hot, crispy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside, french-fry style moreish marvels, and, although we wanted pudding, we couldn't fit it in.
    Well-priced, well-sourced, well-cooked & prepared food - a gem.
It's a tragic shame it's in Clapham (I live in Hackney) but at least it's not full of the usual Clapham collar-up crowd.

'Why should people get to know you?' That's a toughie! i really hate filling in this sort of thing but i suppose if needs be. I'm quite stubborn...
