Probably the oldest pub in the area, oddly marooned by World War II bomb damage to the surrounding houses and their subsequent redevelopment into offices, the Rose & Crown is one of Shepherd Neame's finest public houses. Landlord Matt Quick has won CAMRA awards and swears that he never uses blanket pressure (added carbon dioxide or nitrogen) to pump his barrels dry. In summer, the large grassy garden is a wonderful boon, on the edge of shady Christchurch churchyard and lined with hop-strewn trellises. A proper local.
