Its popularity breeds contempt among some people, but the C&G remains an almost perfect local: far enough off the beaten track to elude the hordes and packed with Victorian charm, from the scrubbed furniture to the antique portraits and gilt-framed mirrors on its pea-green walls. Small and cosy - never more so than when evening comes and staff draw blinds and dim lights - the Crown also turns out simple but superb pub grub. London Pride is the only ale on tap, Aspall the only draft cider; but there's a good wine list featuring four reds and four whites by the glass for less than £3.60.

Like Hannah, this pub has always been a favourite of mine. I know it has been swapped around a bit but I couldn't find anything wrong with the food - maybe I'm just a sucker for three times cooked chips. I ordered the burger and my friend ordered the rabbit confit linguine [mushroom sauce]. We didn't really expect to see that on a pub food menu The burger was good - meat was seasoned very well [you'd be surprised by how many places don't] and it came with plenty of sides.
Atmosphere was great as usual. Lively place but always relaxed- still managed to have decent conversation over the bubbling pub noises.
This pub used to be one of my favourites - has it changed management? We ate there last night and the food was incredibly disappointing. My sardines were burnt and strangely flavourless; the peas that went with my partner's fish pie were ice cold, and when they brought a replacement dish of peas they were warm but hard - hadn't been cooked! Very disappointing, especially given the prices - in these economic conditions, tantamount to the kiss of death. Certainly won't bother again.
